The Screen Capture (on Linux) or Display Capture (on Mac and Windows) source type records directly from a specified screen and will capture anything that happens in the designated area. Let’s take a closer look at these two, and their settings, now. There are several different types of sources in OBS but the two you’ll use most for screen recording are Screen Capture and Window Capture. The available settings differ depending on the type of source. This will give you a list of source types to choose from:Īfter you select a source you’ll get the chance to name it:Īfter you hit OK on a name for your source you’ll see a popup window where you can enter settings before adding the new source to your scene. To add a new source, first select a scene to contain it, then click the “ +” button at the bottom of the Sources panel in the bottom left of the interface. In a nutshell, a Source determines where the data for your recording comes from, and a Scene is a container for sources.Īll Sources need a Scene to hold them. You can switch between these scenes or layer and combine them as required to create a great production.

What you can do is to export the variable to your ~/.bash_profile (for you) or /etc/profile (for all users on the system). But setting the environment variable and starting OBS from the terminal each time is not convenient. You just verified that you can record your screen on Wayland. If you see that, you could start recording the screen in Wayland now. Now it should show your screen recursively infinite number of times. Select PipeWire as the source and then it asks you to choose a display screen. You explicitly asked OBS Studio to use Wayland this time with the QT_QPA_PLATFORM variable. Your focus should be on the OBS Studio GUI. It will show some message on the terminal. In the same terminal, run the following command to start OBS Studio: obs Open a terminal and use the following command: export QT_QPA_PLATFORM=wayland OBS Studio does not switch to use Wayland automatically in Ubuntu at least. Add screen capture source in OBS Studioĭo you see anything that reads Screen Capture (PipeWire)? Do you see PipeWire option in the screen sources? Click on the + symbol under the Sources list. The main step is to add Pipewire as a screen capture source. Now start OBS Studio and go through all the stuff it shows on the first run. Please make sure that you are using Wayland. Step 2: Check if Wayland capture is working If there is an older version of OBS Studio installed already, it will be upgraded to the newer version.įor Fedora, Arch and other distributions, please check your package manager or unofficial repositories for installing the latest version of OBS Studio.
